Pin Codes in India
PIN Code is an acronym of Postal Index Number, used by the Indian Postal Administration to assign a unique ID to each state, city, and district of the country. In order to ensure quick and efficient delivery of postal services, the Indian Postal Administration has allotted a 6-digit code to every specific geographical region.
India is a gigantic country and which is why identifying and locating each and every specific region across the vast lands can be a huge challenge. Hence, a PIN code helps in easily locating the address of any area in the country. The Indian Postal Service introduced this concept on 15th August 1972. India has 9 major PIN regions out of which 8 are assigned based on geographical regions and the 9th one is exclusively reserved for the India Army.
Structure of a PIN Code
A PIN Code is a combination of 6-digits where each identifier has a unique significance. The first digit indicates the region in India, the second is allotted to identify the sub-region, and the third one represents the sorting district.
The last 3 digits of the PIN code are the unique code for a specific Post Office in the district.
For example, the PIN Code of Central Delhi is 110001. Hence, this is how a 6-digit PIN Code is structured:
1: Represents the Northern Region.
1: Sub-region in India, Postal Circle of Delhi.
0: Sorting District, none.
001: The Code allotted to the Postal Office of Connaught Place, New Delhi.
