  • Assembly Election Dates To Be Announced on Jan 4; Seven-Phase Polls in UP Likely
    The Election Commission is likely to announce the dates for five state elections, including the crucial state of Uttar Pradesh, on January 4 next year. According to sources in the poll panel, elections for Uttarakhand, Punjab, Goa and Manipur will be held in single phase. Elections in Uttar Pradesh, India's most populous state, are expected to be the longest in seven phases. The Home Ministry is expected to call a meeting as well in order to discuss security cover for the election-bound states. The central government may provide the states with central armed police for smooth conduct of the elections.

  • UP Polls 2017: Akhilesh Releases Parallel List of 235 Candidates, Shivpal Declares His Remaining 68
    Indicating the deepening rift within the Samajwadi Party, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav has released his own list of 235 candidates for the upcoming Assembly elections in the state, a day after his father and party chief Mulayam Singh Yadav released the official list. In the meanwhile, the party’s state unit chief Shivpal Yadav also announced a second list of 68 candidates. Akhilesh announced the new list after meeting Mulayam Singh Yadav earlier in the day. Mulayam had rejected the names proposed by Akhilesh and also ruled him out as the party’s chief ministerial candidate.

  • Amarinder, Kejriwal Clash On Twitter Over Punjab Elections 2017
    Punjab Congress chief Amarinder Singh and Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal were engaged in a war of words on the social media platform Twitter with the former daring Kejriwal to contest against him in the upcoming Punjab polls. Kejriwal replied that he was not contesting Punjab Assembly elections but fighting the Badals and state minister Bikram Singh Majithia to help free the state from the menace of drugs. Following this, Amarinder demanded an apology from him for making "false personal commitments".

  • Both BJP, Congress Claim Win in Gujarat Gram Panchayat Polls
    Results for 2,891 of the 8,624 gram panchayats in Gujarat, which went to polls on December 27, were declared today. Both the ruling BJP and opposition Congress have claimed their respective victories in the Panchayat polls. At least two incidents of clashes were reported between groups of rival candidates in Vadodara and Banskantha soon after the results started tricking in. Gram Panchayat polls are, however, not fought on party symbols as candidates need to fight on their personal capacity and each voter is required to cast two votes, one to elect sarpanch and another for electing panchayat member for his ward.
