  • Army Chief General Dalbir Singh visited the Siachen glacier two days in advance of the proposed visit of PM Narendra Modi there. In a statement, a Defence spokesperson said the army chief will receive PM who is scheduled to visit the Leh and Kargil on August 12. Singh interacted with the army commander Northern Command and General Officer Commanding 14 Corps on the security set up. He is likely to brief Modi about the ground situation prevalent along the borders there.
  • RSS Chief Mohan Bhagwat said the credit for the formation of BJP-led NDA government at the Centre goes to the people and not to any individual or party. At a function, he said, “Credit for formation of new government goes to the people of the country as they wanted to bring about a change. It was not due to any particular leader or party”. PM Narendra Modi had earlier hailed Amit Shah as ‘Man of the Match’ at the BJP National Council Meet in New Delhi. 
  • Union Law and Justice Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad on Monday emphasised on the need to reform the justice delivery system in the country. During Question Hour session in Lok Sabha, he said, “There is a need to expedite the process of justice delivery system. We need to debate judicial reforms, we need to reform our justice delivery system”.
  • The government on Monday withdrew The Judicial Appointments Commission Bill, 2013 in the Rajya Sabha. It said two new bills will be introduced soon. The bill sought to establish a Judicial Appointments Commission (JAC) to make recommendations to the President on the appointment and transfer of judges in the higher judiciary. Law Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad said, “The reason as to why the bill is being withdrawn is in current circumstances. The standing committee said the provisions shall be made in the constitution itself”.
  • Cricket legend Sachin Tendulkar, who has remained absent from all the sessions of Parliament this year, has been granted special permission to remain absent for the rest of the current session that ends on August 14. He has been exempted by Speaker and Chairman of Rajya Sabha, Hamid Ansari, for personal and professional reasons cited by him. He was nominated to the Upper House in 2012 by the then Manmohan Singh's government.
  • Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) led NDA government is considering to bestow former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee with Bharat Ratna award. The other top order includes Bahujan Samaj Party founder (BSP) Kanshiram also. The announcement is expected to be made on Independence Day. BJP has been raising the demand for Bharat Ratna for Vajpayee for a long time now.
