  • The government is planning to hold talks with Congress and other parties on insurance bill on Monday. It is likely to move the bill in Rajya Sabha on Tuesday. All employees’ union in Life Insurance Corporation (LIC) and General Insurance Corporation (GIC) have called for a day’s strike across the country on Monday to protest against the decision of allowing 49% FDI in the insurance sector. CPI leader and AITUC general secretary Gurudas Dasgupta said, "Our apprehensions are that FDI will influence the insurance market. In most of the western countries, including the US, private insurance companies have created hell. It will compromise the interests of long-term investors. The presence of private FDI in insurance sector will jeopardize stability of the financial market”.
  • PM Modi has called for a meeting on UPSC language row once he returns from Nepal. The Congress had served a notice for discussion on the same. The government is constantly trying to find a solution to the row over proposed UPSC preliminary exam pattern that has been opposed by the aspirants for being discriminatory towards candidates from Hindi speaking states. The Verma Committee that was formed to analyse the issue, had suggested a status quo to the exam pattern.
  • Following an uproar by AIADMK MPs both the Houses of Parliament were adjourned over controversial pictures of Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Jayalalithaa and Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The pictures appeared on a Sri Lankan Defence Ministry website last week. Parliamentary Affairs Minister Venkaiah Naidu said that India will raise the issue with the Sri Lankan government. External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj also condemned the controversial pictures.
  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi said that he was ready to consider suggestions to review the 1950 India-Nepal Friendship Treaty. The treaty governs the relationship between the two countries. He said, “My doors are open, I invite you to bring any suggestions to review the 1950 Treaty, if you so want”. Both the sides have been demanding to review the treaty. However, there has been no progress on such account.
  • During all-party meeting on the Insurance Laws Amendment Bill, Finance Minister Arun Jaitley asked Congress leaders to either approve, reject or amend the legislation in the Rajya Sabha. He also made it clear that the government will not allow Congress to wait and buy time on the bill. The final call on the bill will be taken in the next two days when parties would meet again to discuss the bill.
  • In an emergency meeting being called over the Civil Services Aptitude Test (CSAT) controversy, the government said that one more attempt will be allowed in 2015 for Civil Services aspirants who appeared in 2011 examinations. MoS Personnel Jitendra Singh said, “English marks will not be included for gradation or merit in UPSC exam." The meeting with top cabinet ministers will be held after the PM returns from Nepal.
