  • Law Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad has assured immediate clearance of amendments sought by Women and Child Welfare Minister Maneka Gandhi to the Juvenile Justice Act. She had recently suggested that juveniles who commit grave crimes including rape must be treated at par with adults. She said that half of all sexual crimes were committed by “16-year-olds who know the Juvenile Justice Act so they can do it".
  • PM Narendra Modi has sent out a wish-list consisting of 17-point people-oriented agenda to his ministries. By August-end, when the NDA government completes 100 days of its governance in office, the agenda will be put in place. On July 10, these points were sent to ministries who were asked to submit their response for the implementation of points by July 20.
  • PM Narendra Modi congratulated Indian cricket team on their Test match victory at Lord’s. He tweeted, “Well played Team India! Congrats on the wonderful victory at Lord’s. We are very delighted & proud of the great performance”. It is only after 28 years that India has won a Test match at Lord’s by beating England by 95 runs.
  • The UPA government has proposed changes in Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS), ensuring product quality and that substandard goods are withdrawn from the market. The defective items will be necessarily recalled. The government will also end the inspector raj on standards. Besides, service providers will be required to follow certain standards in order to ensure the quality of the services they render.
  • The NDA government has said that the plan as was proposed by the previous UPA government to establish anti-terror hub NCTC has been “kept in abeyance”. Minister of State for Home Kiren Rijiju told Lok Sabha, “Operationalisation of the National Counter Terrorism Centre has been kept in abeyance”. The proposal was first mooted by the then Home Minister P. Chidambaram but faced severe resistance from many Chief Ministers, including Narendra Modi.
