  • External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj has sought information on Indians who are jailed abroad. She has asked all Indian missions abroad to provide updated details about the Indian nationals languishing in foreign jails. This decision was taken after the release of 40 Indians who returned from Saudi Arabia after being held in prison for about one year.
  • Finance Minister Arun Jaitley said that more steps will be taken to expedite economic recovery. The government attributed the present economic crisis to previous UPA regime and promised to initiate all necessary steps along with budgetary provisions for economic recovery.
  • Telecom Secretary Rakesh Garg said that he will aim for 100% rural tele-density in 3-4 years, besides increasing telecom infrastructure. He said, “It will be prime objective to take broadband connectivity to village level, that is to increase telecom infrastructure. Second priority is take rural telecom penetration from 44 per cent to 100 per cent in coming 3-4 years”.
  • After meeting Prime Minister Narendra Modi, US Deputy Secretary of State William Burns described Modi as a “very impressive man”. On a report that US National Security Agency was authorised to snoop on BJP, he said that he was “not at liberty to say more in public”.
  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi celebrates late South African leader Nelson Mandela 96th birth anniversary. Modi said, “The beloved Madiba's work, ideals and principles continue to inspire us. He demonstrated the triumph of peace, equality and service”. He also added that, “Mandela Day is not only a day to remember the great man himself but also to reaffirm our commitment to work towards world peace".
  • PM Narendra Modi chaired a meeting in Delhi to review the functioning of the Prime Minister’s National Relief Fund (PMNRF). He also suggested various qualitative measures for the better management of the funds. In a tweet from the PM’s Office, he also called for “selecting beneficiaries in a comprehensive, scientific and humanitarian basis, giving priority to children and poor”.
