Here are the highlights for Day 42 of Modi government

  • The Modi government faced its first challenge as the budget session began in parliament today. The opposition demanded discussion on the problem of price rise.
  • Lashing out at the Modi government over price hike, Samajwadi Party chief Mulayam Singh said that there has been an increase in inflation after the new government took charge.
  • According to the sources, the final call on the appointment of Amit Shah as BJP president will be taken by Narendra Modi after the budget session.
  • As per the reports, after the presentation of new government's first budget, PM along with Finance Minister Arun Jaitley will visit Brazil to attend the BRICS summit.
  • In a drive to remove all governors appointed by the UPA government, the Modi government shifted Gujarat Governor Kamla Beniwal to Mizoram. Beniwal did not share a good relationship with Modi when he was Gujarat's CM.
  • In a letter to Modi, CM J Jayalalithaa wrote that recovery of Katchatheevu (a controversial place managed by Sri Lanka) is the only way of ensuring safety of Indian fishermen. She urged the government to solve the issue as soon as possible.
  • In the first session of the Parliament, CPM leader Sitaram Yechury attacked Modi over the issue of rising prices.
  • As per the reports, the government has asked the Railway department to provide free WiFi in long-distance trains. The decision was made even after the Railway Ministry suggested that the cost of providing this facility is too high and would lead to loses.
  • Under Employees Pension Scheme 1995, the newly-formed government today approved the minimum monthly pension of Rs 1,000. Around 28 lakh people receiving the pension will get the benefit.
  • Labour and Employment Minister Narendra Singh Tomar said that the government will grant more funds for skill development among the youth which in turn will generate more employment opportunities for them. The 5% of the funds granted for border area development will also be utilised for the purpose.
