The Raghubar Das led Bhartiya Janta Party (BJP) is looking at a crucial setback in the state of Jharkhand as the Hemant Soren led opposition alliance is marching towards the majority mark. The alliance that includes Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM), Congress and Rashtriya Janta Dal (RJD) has maintained considerable leads on 41 out of the 81 seat-assembly. However, the incumbent party is still leading on 30 seats while their ex-allies, the AJSU Party leading on 4 seats. The Babulal Marandi led Jharkhand Vikas Morcha (JVM), that could very well act as the ‘Kingmakers’ are leading on 3 seats.
Many political pundits speculated that this five-phase election, which took place from 30th November till 20th December, 2019, to be a Tribal vs Urban contest. While the BJP managed to garner the urban vote bank, they failed to make their mark in the tribal domain. In the South Chotanagpur regions, Palamu and Santhal Pargana the BJP is neck to neck with the JMM+ but in regions of Kolhan and North Chotanagpur, the JMM+ is way ahead of the them. Even BJP’s star candidate CM Raghubar Das is trailing by over 1000 votes against his former cabinet colleague and independent candidate Saryu Roy in the Jamshedpur East constituency.
The path is looking clear for the JMM+ to form government in the state. Nevertheless, the BJP has still not dropped their weapons and are still very positive of returning into power. Both Congress and BJP have secured their first wins in Bermo and Chandankyari respectively. Also, as per latest updates, AJSU has won the Gomia constituency
