In 2009 Election Results the UPA won around 261 out of 543 seats, and in the second position was NDA with 158 seats, while 23 seats were won by Left parties.

In 2014 Election Results the BJP won 282 seats out of 543 seats. This took the NDA tally to 336 seats out of 543 seats in the Lok Sabha. INC could only manage to win 44 seats and stayed in the second position while AIADMK party from Tamil Nadu came third with 37 seats in the 2014 Lok Sabha Elections.

In 2019, the BJP is set to return to power at the Centre after a sweeping win in the 2019 Lok Sabha election , armed with a bigger mandate than in the 2014 General Election. The party - led by the Prime Minister Narendra Modi and BJP President Amit Shah duo has secured 303 seats in the 17th Lok Sabha. Meanwhile, the Congress, the main Opposition party, managed to increase its vote share from 2014 only by a handful of votes, with a final tally of 52 seats. There will be no Leader of Opposition in the upcoming Lower House for a second consecutive term.

Azamgarh Lok Sabha Election Summary

Azamgarh is one of the eastern constituencies of the state of Uttar Pradesh. The district, in the 2014 Lok Sabha elections, saw a contest among the Samajwadi Party's candidate Mulayam Singh Yadav, Bahujan Samaj Party's candidate Shah Alam, BJP's candidate Shri Ramakant Yadav, Congress' Arvind Jaiswal and AAP's Rajesh Yadav.

And it was Mulayam Singh Yadav who emerged as the winner of the Azamgarh Lok Sabha seat.

Samajwadi Party's candidate Mulayam Singh Yadav won the election by a resounding 340306 votes, defeating Ramakant Yadav by a margin of 63204 votes. In third place, Shah Alam won a total of 266528 votes.

Ramakant Yadav has been in power in this area ever since 1999, however he switched from SP to BSP and finally to BJP in the year 2009.

Ramakant Yadav, contesting on a BJP ticket, was declared the winner in 2009. He received a total number of 2,47,648 comprising 35.13% of the total valid votes of 7,04,863. The victory margin in his case was 49,039.

BSP's candidate Akbar Ahmad Dumpy collected a total of 1,98,609 votes which was 28.18% of the total valid votes. Durga Prasad Yadav came in a close third with 1,23,844 votes followed by the independent candidate Dr. Javed Akhtar who received 59,270 votes.

The major issues which were highlighted in these elections were the general infrastructure problems of the district, lack of basic amenities, religion and caste based politics. Also, the district lags behind when it comes to the industrial development ever since independence.

One of the 80 parliamentary constituencies of Uttar Pradesh, Azamgarh Parliamentary Constituency came into existence in 1952. The total number of electorates in the Azamgarh Lok Sabha Constituency (constituency number 69) according to Election Commission of India 2009 reports are 1,578,854 of which 853,748 are males and 725,106 are females. It comprises of five segments, of which one is reserved for the SC category. It is one of the two constituencies representing Azamgarh District. The district of Azamgarh covers an area of 4,054 sq km and is located between the rivers of Ganges and Ghagahara. It has 7 tehsils and over 4,000 villages which house a total of 4,613,913 people. Females have a 52% majority while 48% comprises of males.

It had a population growth rate of 17.11% from 2001 to 2011 and has a population density of 1,138 people per sq km. Children below the age of six occupy 15.30% of the population and the sex ratio here is 1019 females for every 1000 males. The average literacy rate of Azamgarh is 70.93% and male and female literacy rates are 81.34% and 60.91% respectively. Hindus have a 53% religious majority followed by 45% of Muslims. Hindi, Urdu, Bhojpuri and Awadhi are widely spoken by the people here. The district is one of the 250 backward districts of the country and receives economic support from the government. The State Highway SH-34 connects the city to the nearby area.
