Haryana sees healthy voter turnout
October 15, 2014 05:00 PM
Over 60 percent of Haryana's 1.63 crore voters had exercised their vote by Wednesday evening in the state assembly elections, authorities said.Voters were still queued up at polling stations and the poll percentage would go up, officials said. The BJP, which is contesting the assembly polls in the state on its own for the first time, was upbeat about the high turnout so far, saying that the voters wanted a change. "The BJP is all set to form the next government in Haryana on its own. We will get a clear majority and end the rule of scams and corruption," BJP leader Abhimanyu said. However, incumbent Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda, who cast his vote in his native village, was not willing to give up easily. "Seeing the response of the voters, I can say that the Congress will win the elections and form the government for a third term," Hooda said. The opposition Indian National Lok Dal (INLD) said that the heavy turnout was an indicator that the party (INLD) was going to form the next government in the state. "We will form the next government," INLD leader Abhay Chautala said. The voting will officially continue till 6 p.m. but all those queuing up by then would be allowed to cast their votes, the officials said. Kurukshetra, Yamunanagar, Mewat, Fatehabad, Kaithal, Jind, Sirsa and Palwal districts led with 65 to nearly 70 percent voting till 3.30 p.m. (IANS)
HC orders Chautala to surrender
October 10, 2014 03:57 PM
The Delhi High Court order directing Indian National Lok Dal (INLD) leader Om Prakash Chautala to surrender at Tihar jail has come as a blow to the former Haryana chief minister and the INLD. Chautala, who was out on bail in recent months on health grounds and was addressing political rallies since late last month in violation of the bail conditions, has been asked to surrender at Tihar jail Saturday. The high court also directed him to stop addressing political rallies. The high court order has come as a blow to the INLD which had been gaining political ground in recent days for the Oct 15 assembly elections in Haryana. The crowds at INLD rallies had started swelling ever since Chautala started addressing them. He addressed dozens of rallies across Haryana in the past fortnight. The high court order came on a petition filed by an individual who pointed out that Chautala was blatantly violating bail conditions. The CBI also pleaded before the court that Chautala's bail be cancelled.
