The AAP is a one-year old political party, which has its mass base in Delhi. It was formed in September last year, when Arvind Kejriwal, the party's present President, parted ways with veteran anti-corruption activist Anna Hazare. Kejriwal announced that his party would be called the Aam Aadmi Party, or the Party for the Common Man, and would fight all 70 seats in the Delhi Legislative Assembly elections.
The primary agenda of the AAP is to ensure a corruption-free political system in India, which would allow maximum transparency of how the government works. The AAP has promised to pass the Lokpal Bill, which will eventually result in a strong anti-corruption political system or the ‘Jan Lokpal' in the state of Delhi.
The AAP has raised everyday concerns of the people of Delhi. The AAP protested against increasing electricity and water bills when Kejriwal began an indefinite fast in March 2013 on the same issue. He urged the people of Delhi to not pay such inflated bills. The AAP demanded an audit of power and electricity supply in Delhi by the Comptroller and Auditor General of India. In June 2013, the AAP joined hands with the auto-rickshaw drivers of Delhi to protest against the Delhi government's ban on advertisements on auto-rickshaws.
A significant achievement of the AAP is their public awareness campaign to educate the common man about the 'right to reject' option that voters can exercise in the electronic voting machines (EVM) from the upcoming elections. The NOTA (None of the above) option has been made available in the EVMs, following a Supreme Court ruling.
The AAP also works towards political decentralization in Delhi.

Aam Aadmi Party Manifesto for Delhi
The much-awaited election manifesto for the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has been released for Delhi assembly elections 2013. The Arvind Kejriwal-lad party has touched upon several burning issues in the capital city, seeking to out-maneuver the rivals. These are highlighted below:
- Healthcare: The party will work to promote alternative systems of medicine, as well as start new hospital to reach the international standard of five beds for every 1,000 people.
- Village empowerment: Decisions pertaining to the villages of Delhi will be taken only by Gram Sabhas. Further, land acquisition in these villages won’t take place without approval of the Gram Sabhas.
- Sanitation: The party says it will work aggressively to connect all homes in Delhi to sewage systems. Local plants for waste management will be constructed, and heavy fines will be imposed on littering.
- Unauthorized colonies and slums: All the unauthorized colonies in Delhi will be regularized with the participation of Mohalla Sabhas. The people living in slums will be rehabilitated and provided flats and plots, with a clear focus on improving the living conditions.
- Unemployment: The party plans to boost local employment by providing loans to young entrepreneurs. It will also work to recruit for all open government positions.
- Economy: Contract labor will be abolished for works that are carried out throughout the year, thereby ensuring minimum wages. The party will also simplify the structure of VAT and oppose FDI in retail.
- Environment: The party plans on working on a war footing to ensure the pollution of Yamuna is minimized and encroachment is eliminated. Street vendors will be given fixed places and licenses to operate. The agenda also includes conservation of Delhi Ridge. Further, the Animal Welfare Board will be given power of enforcement.
- Transport: The party will ensure more stands for auto-rickshaws, and will work to eliminated black marketing and police harassment of the same. Auto fares will be regularly revised, as needed.
- Social justice: The party promises to work on a large scale to bring social justice. The Scheduled Castes will be provided zero-interest business loans, besides benefiting directly from welfare schemes. The safai karamchari posts will be regularized, and the Valmikis will be provided other avenues of livelihood. The functioning of the Delhi Waqf Board will be improved, and instances of false police cases against Muslims will be minimized. The party will also work to improve the living conditions of the 1984 riot victims, and will reopen cases that were wrongly closed. Further, Punjabi and Urdu will be provided the status of second languages in Delhi, and appropriate jobs will be filled for the same. The conditions of the disabled will also be improved by expanding the definition of disability and ensuring they get proper schooling and other facilities.
Evidently, the Aam Aadmi Party has created the most ambitious manifesto to date. While it isn’t practical to assume that all these measures will get implemented, Delhi will witness a swift transformation even if a handful are.
