About Bhabanipur Assembly Constituency

Bhabanipur is constituency No. 159 of West Bengal legislative assembly. It is situated in Kolkata and is part of Lok Sabha constituency No. 23 which is Kolkata Dakshin. It is an open constituency. According to data collected by the Election Commission of India, the constituency of Bhabanipur has 2,12,821 registered voters out of which 1,20,537 are male and 92,284 are female voters. In the 2011 assembly elections, Subrata Bakshi of Trinamool Congress won from this constituency. He defeated his nearest rival, Narayan Prasad Jain of CPI(M), by a formidable margin of 49,936 votes. As many as 10 candidates contested from this seat. The voter turnout was 63.78 %. A by-poll was conducted for this constituency after Bakshi resigned to make way for chief minister Mamata Banerjee to contest. Banerjee hadn't contested from any seat during the assembly elections. Since she had to become a member of the assembly within six months of assuming office, she contested in the Bhabanipur bypoll.
