It is situated in Maharajganj district in Purvanchal region of the state. It comes under Maharajganj Lok Sabha constituency. The Maharajganj assembly seat is reserved for scheduled castes.
According to data with the Election Commission of India, Maharajganj has 3,53,007 registered voters. It comprises 1,90,636 male and 1,62,371 female registered voters.
The Samajwadi Party won this seat by 36,155 votes in the 2012 Assembly elections. Sudama, the winning Samajwadi Party candidate, got 84,581 votes. The nearest contender was Nirmesh Mangal of BSP who got 48,426 votes. The voter turnout was 61.27 %.
