Appachu Ranjan is a member of Bharatiya Janata Party and he has been elected as MLA from Madikeri assembly constituency for five times. He has also served as the Minister of Youth Services and Sports in the Karnataka Government.

He won the 2018 Vidhan Sabha elections by defeating B. A. Jivijaya of Congress by almost 15 thousand votes.
