Karnataka election witnessed a fierce battle between the Congress and the BJP. The elections were held on May 12, across 222 assembly constituencies, as elections in R R Nagar and Jayanagar have been deferred by the Election Commission. The results were declared on May 15, and the BJP emerged as the single largest party with 104 seats followed by the Indian National Congress with 78 seats, while Janata Dal(Secular) won 37 seats. The Congress suffered an embarrassing loss as the party came down by nearly 50 seats compared to 122 seats in the previous Assembly elections held in 2013. On the other hand, the BJP improved its performance significantly as the party's seats went up by 64 seats compared to 40 seats registered in 2013. JD(S) which is a strong regional party won 37 seats, 3 less from the party's tally in 2013. A total of 2,621 candidates contested the elections across the state contesting indipendently as well as with several parties that participated in the elections.
*The elections were held in 222 Assembly constituencies. Elections in RR Nagar constituency has been deferred to May 28, while the elections in Jayanagar constituency have been postponed due to death of BJP MLA and contestant B N Vijaykumar. The dates for Jayanagar polls will be updated as EC notification.
