A town in the Hazaribagh district of Jharkhand, Hazaribagh had a population of 290,098 as per 2011 India census. The assembly constituency of Hazaribagh falls under Hazaribagh parliamentary constituency. The seat has been occupied by INC since 2005. Saurabh Narayan Singh won the 2009 assembly elections for the second consecutive time. He defeated Deo Dayal of BJP. Singh bagged 66514 votes as against Dayal's 57227 votes. The word Hazaribagh is a combination of two words, Hazar means one thousand and Bagh means garden. Thus it is a 'city of a thousand gardens'.
