About Sunil Arora
Sunil Arora (born 13 April 1956) is a retired 1980 batch Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer of Rajasthan cadre. Having served as a secretary to the Government of India in two ministries. Arora assumed office as one of the two Election Commissioners of India on 31 August 2017, On 26 November 2018 Arora was appointed as the Chief Election Commissioner
Arora has graduate (BA Honours) and postgraduate (MA) degrees in English from Panjab University in the Union Territory of Chandigarh. Arora's father is a retired accounts officer of the Indian Railways, whereas his mother served in DAV College, Hoshiarpur. Of his two brothers, one is also an IAS officer, whereas, the other is a diplomat from the Indian Foreign Service.
Mr. Arora had been the Information and Broadcasting Secretary, and Secretary in the Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship. A 1980-batch IAS officer of the Rajasthan cadre, Mr. Arora has worked in ministries such as Finance, Textiles and Planning Commission.
He also served as Joint Secretary in the Ministry of Civil Aviation during 1999-2002 and CMD, Indian Airlines for five years (two years as additional charge and three years as full charge).
In Rajasthan, besides district postings in Dholpur, Alwar, Nagaur and Jodhpur, he was Secretary to the Chief Minister during 1993-1998 and Principal Secretary to CM (2005-2008) and handled Information and Public Relations (IPR), Industries and Investment Departments.
