The 8th elections for Delhi Legislative Assembly held in 2008 made Sheila Dikshit of the Congress continue her role as Chief Minister of Delhi for her 3rd consecutive term from 2008 to 2013. 70 MLAs were elected from 70 Assembly constituencies, 58 comprising general constituencies and 12 belonging to the Scheduled Caste category. A total of 61,77,344 valid votes were cast. The INC won the majority number of seats numbering 42, followed by the BJP with 23 seats, BSP with 2 seats and others won 2 seats.
Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit's tenure as CM after the 2008 election was significant. She introduced her internationally-acclaimed 'Bhagidari' initiative across Delhi. In this system, the common man of
Delhi had a responsible role to play in the city's governance. She also initiated the Right to Information Act. She also successfully organized the Commonwealth Games in Delhi. Her scheme of democratic decentralization and open administration has been much appreciated for its immense success.
