The 4th Assembly Elections of the Delhi Vidhan Sabha were held in 1983. Interestingly, unlike in the previous years, when a number of regional as well as registered unrecognized political parties contested for the State Assembly elections in Delhi, in the 1983 elections only national parties along with independent candidates participated. There was a tough competition between the INC and the BJP, over winning the majority of the seats.
In this election, a total of 56 MLAs, representing 56 Assembly constituencies were elected to the
Delhi Vidhan Sabha. A significant number of women as well as members of the SC and ST category were elected as MLAs. The total number of votes polled in the 1983 elections was 856,055. In this election, Delhi did not get any Chief Minister as it had ceased to exist as a state and was under President's rule, being governed by the Centre.
During 1977 elections,
Delhi was under President's rule as the state had ceased to exist. Therefore, there was no Chief Minister of Delhi and it was ruled as a Union Territory by the Central Government.
