Serchhip Assembly in Mizoram 2018 - Mizo National Front Will Give Tough Fight to Congress

In Serchhip assembly in Mizoram, Congress and Mizo National Front (MNF) are two biggest contestants since 1998. While Congress win Serchhip seat 3 consecutive time in past since 2003 it may not be easy for them to win 2018 election. MNF may be the 2018 election winner from Serchhip Constituency replacing Congress.

MLA Lal Thanhawla is the popular leader here who has won the seat for six times since 1984, losing once in 1998 when a retired PWD chief K Thangzuala (Mizo National Front) defeated him by 696 votes. In 2013, Lal Thanhawla of Congress won by a margin of 734 votes defeating his nearest MNF rival Lalramzauva, who got 4,985 in a four cornered contest. Thanhawla got 5719 votes in the elections. In this year, MNF saw a sharp increase in popularity as compared to Congress since MNF vote bank increased by approximately 50% while Congress vote bank increased by merely 20%.

MNF saw a sharp decline in 2008 elections with 27.37% vote and stood third in the list. Its candidate R. Lalhnuna could get 3338 votes. In this year Congress candidate Thanhawal got 4937 votes defeating C. Lalramzaua of ZNP with vote margin of 952. Lalramzaua could get 3792 votes.

In 2003, Thanhawla once again won the elections and defeated IND candidate J. Sawilaia with a margin of 927 votes. 26.59% vote increase in Congress recorded this year. This year MNF didn’t contested from Serchhip and its popularity declined very much in 2008 elections, the reason why it came next to ZNP and third in the list. From 2003 onwards Congress wins the seat and remains winner since then

Thanhawal is the popular leader in the area since he has done some tremendous work from implementing Indira Awaas Yojana to MNREGA to the Rajiv Gandhi Grameen Vidhyuti Karan Yojna that have changed the face of Sercchip, which was once known as backward area. While the winning margin increased in 2003 & 2008 Congress saw first time decline in 2013 election which is not a favourable indicator for Congress and chances are MNF may be the 2018 election winner.
