About Charkhari Assembly (Vidha Sabha) Constituency – Bye Elections 2014

The by-polls of the Charkhari assembly constituency of Uttar Pradesh have been scheduled to be held on September 13, 2014. The Vidhan Sabha seat fell vacant because the sitting MLA Uma Bharti from BJP won the 2014 Lok Sabha general elections 2014 from the Jhansi constituency. In these 2014 by-polls Geeta Singh from BJP, Ramjivan Dada from Congress and Shabbir Ahmad Valmiki from Samajwadi Party will contest the election for the Charkhari MLA seat. The Bahujan Samaj Party has opted out of the by-polls stating its principles of not contesting by-polls. This time the stakes are high on BJP and SP since BJP swept the entire nation in the recent Lok Sabha elections and SP because is the ruling party in the state.

The Assembly Election in the constituency were last held in 2012 and BJP’s Uma Bharti had won the Vidhan Sabha seat after defeating Kaptan Singh of SP.

Charkhari, which has over 3 lakh electors is a different constituency since except for Congress which was in power from 1977 to 1989, none of the other parties have been able to come to power in this constituency year after year.
