War between Arvind Kejriwal and Najeeb Jung
The ongoing public spat between Lieutenant Governor Najeeb Jung and Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal over the control of Delhi administration has exposed the grey areas in governance that require immediate redressal to ensure against any such crisis in the city state of Delhi. The immediate provocation was the appointment of Shakuntala Gamlin as acting Chief Secretary of Delhi by the Lieutenant Governor in spite of Kejriwal’s strong opposition on 15th May this year. This made the Chief Minister cry foul ...Read More
Municipal Corporation of Delhi - benefits and challenges of having same party at the centre
New Delhi is one of the largest capitals in the world with a dense population. The city is governed by three Municipal bodies. The largest body being the erstwhile Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD), New Delhi Municipal Corporation (NDMC) and the Delhi Cantonment Board. MCD first came into existence through an Act of Parliament on 7 April 1958. In 1992, the 73rd and 74th Amendments brought in changes in the functioning of the Municipal Corporation giving greater focus to developing ...Read More
Can Ajay Maken bring back the Congress on track in Delhi
Visit the busy public places, University campus as well as the 138 metro stations of Delhi and more often than not one now bumps into volunteers wearing the Congress cap and holding the Congress flag circulating pamphlets. These pamphlets are not about the achievements of the party (does it have any to trumpet about right now?). They aren’t either meant to target the Opposition. But they carry the message of how to protect one from the spread of swine flu! ...Read More
Arvind Kejriwal's dual role in Aam Aadmi Party
In its first term in office, Arvind Kejriwal-led AAP government lasted just 49 days before making a hasty exit. In its second term, in less than a month, the party is once again in crisis and this time it is Arvind Kejriwal’s ‘dual’ role between party and government that is the trigger that could well blow into a major inner party conflict. Is the controversy justified? One must seek answers from past experiences of political parties and the impact of ...Read More
Will Delhi and the Centre continue to remain at loggerheads
BJP rode into power on the back of a massive mandate. But this did not come without a bitter fight with a rising AAP that viewed itself as a serious alternative to a jaded UPA II and BJP, which is perceived as communal. Vicious political upstaging Accusations flew thick and fast between the BJP and AAP and once the General Elections saw BJP eliminating all opposition, AAP withdrew into obscurity. No one gave the party a serious chance to make ...Read More
Arvind Kejriwal Janata Darbars
Spectacle and Arvind Kejriwal seem inseparable. The Aam Aadmi Party supremo’s second innings as Delhi chief minister, after a huge mandate, is as spectacular as his first one – devoid of any compunction of playing to the gallery. Consider him resuming his Janata Darbars even before he is settled in Delhi! He still lives at his wife’s official accommodation at Kaushambi in Ghaziabad, Uttar Pradesh and it is here that he is holding his Janata Darbars. Doesn’t this sound weird ...Read More
Can Modi and Kejriwal governments function together
How often did we find on national television channels the Bharatiya Janata Party leaders shooting down the Aam Aadmi Party’s promises as “utter lies” given the limitations of the Delhi government in implementing such promises? The BJP attacks on the AAP were based on the fact that Delhi was still not a full-fledged state and that any city government in Delhi therefore, had to depend on the Centre. The BJP’s reason therefore was that only a BJP government could yield ...Read More
How Delhi can change under new governance
At least three news items, within a couple of days of the Aam Aadmi Party taking control of Delhi, catch attention: Government water tankers reaching those parched unauthorised localities of the national capital that they had never visited before Early morning cleaning of drains in some other unauthorised colonies, which was a rarity The Delhi cabinet deciding, in its very first sitting on 16 February, to ban demolition in residential areas So hasn’t the new government in Delhi made a ...Read More
Is Punjab the next destination for Aam Aadmi Party
After Delhi, can Punjab be the next big haul for the Aam Aadmi Party? After all, it is the only state from where the AAP could win seats (four seats to be more precise) in the last general elections. So, shouldn’t the AAP now embark on a plan to do well in Punjab straightaway to make a dent in the Shiromani Akali Dal-Bharatiya Janata Party citadel well on time when it goes to poll in 2017? Yet there is some ...Read More
Kejriwals oath ceremony in Ramlila Maidan
It was on 14 February 2014 when Arvind Kejriwal had unceremoniously vacated the chief minister’s chair in a whiff – a decision that had surprised everybody. With a quirk of irony, exactly a year later – on 14 February 2015 – he swears in again as the Chief Minister of Delhi. St. Valentine’s Day has a special significance for the bespectacled leader and his Aam Aadmi Party. During this intervening period, he and his party have seen it all – ...Read More
