Delhi Elections Results 2013

The 15-year rule of the Congress in Delhi came to an end on Sunday with the results of the 2013 Delhi Assembly elections being announced. Though the results resulted in a hung assembly with no single part winning a clear majority, the elections gave rise to the prominent position played by the debutant Arvind Kejriwal-led nascent Aam Aadmi Party (AAP). Kejriwal’s singular victory in the New Delhi constituency, coupled with the 28 Assembly constituencies that it bagged, has surprised all political rivals including the Congress and the BJP. Delhi BJP President Vijay Goel said that while it was known that the AAP would play a significant role, the party’s massive victory in most constituencies came as a surprise. Kejriwal dedicated his win to the people of the capital who reposed faith in the democracy of Delhi. Sheila Dikshit said that the Congress would examine into the causes of its humiliating defeat in the capital.

Polling statistics of Delhi Assembly Elections 2013

Date of Election

The 2013 Assembly Elections in Delhi were held on December 4. The results will be announced on December 8.

Entry of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) in 2013 Delhi Assembly Election

The Delhi elections have historically been a battleground of two players - the Indian National Congress (INC) and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), with the former gaining the upper hand in the last three elections. However, the emergence of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) ("Common Man's Party") will complicate the equation. AAP was launched in November 2012 by activist Arvind Kejriwal, who has ignited national-level debates by his high-profile exposes.

Kejriwal was central to the Anna Hazare anti-corruption movement before he seceded to form his own party. Although he is not considered a major threat by either INC or BJP, his extreme popularity and clean image might give this assembly election in Delhi an unexpected twist.

Delhi Assembly Election Budget

In the revised guidelines issued by the Election Commission of India, parties are restricted to an expenditure of Rs. 14 lakh per candidate. However, these limits are seldom adhered to, and given the stakes this time, some analysts are speculating expenses to the tune of Rs. 100 crore.

Leave all ironies on one side and this one on another. High voter turnout in Delhi assembly elections has turned out to be a cause of concern for the ruling Congress and opposition BJP. They are spooked by the fact this sudden upsurge in young voters is triggered by the idealism-heavy campaigning of the Aam Admi Party. It won’t be wise to speculate... Read More
“Ab Dilli Dur Nahin.” Although from a completely different context, this legendary Raj Kapoor movie immediately strikes a chord ahead of the Delhi Assembly polls barely a week away. The one common truth underlying the plot in both, the movie and the upcoming Delhi elections, is “the search for justice.” Yes, in the 15-year jinx that the... Read More
Learning to play by the rules is still a distant thought for Indian political parties. Take the case of Delhi. A total of 313 FIRs have been registered against the political outfits for violating poll conduct only a month before the state goes to assembly elections. Surprisingly, the maximum number of FIRs has been registered against a political entity which... Read More
For many reasons, the upcoming polls are a stark departure from the usual political scenario known to the citizens. There is of course, the apparently irresistible hum of the NaMo mantra, increasingly being chanted across every nook and corner of India. Even more interesting is the gradual but distinct rise of a new man in the Indian political... Read More
