Supriyo had joined active politics only in March 2014.
Early Life of Babul Supriyo
Born on December 15, 1970 in Uttarpara, which is a small town in the Hooghly district of West Bengal, Supriyo belongs to a musical family. Trained by his grandfather Banikantha NC Baral – a famous vocalist and composer, he holds a degree of Bachelor in Commerce from the Calcutta University. He was working with a multinational bank, before he responded to his inner call and left his job to make his career in singing that has been his real passion. Since his childhood, Supriyo has been performing in All India Radio and Doordarshan.
Suprio shot to fame with his popular Bollywood numbers in the blockbuster movies such as Kaho Naa Pyaar Hai and Hungama. He has sung for more than 70 Hindi films and has also been a leading playback singer in many other languages, including Oriya. Before making his career in Bollywood, Supriyo has been a lead actor and playback singer in various Bengali films. He has performed in various shows around the world, including USA, UK and Canada. He has also been recognised for anchoring in his hit TV show ‘K for Kishore’ and for singing opening themes in several television serials produced by Balaji Telefilms. His family consists of his wife Riaa Supriyo and a daughter.
Political Career of Babul Supriyo
After Tapan Sikdar, Satyabrata Mukherjee, he is the third Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) politician in West Bengal. He is the first BJP MP from Asansol. His political career took wings in March 2014 when he joined the BJP and registered an impressive win by defeating Dola Sen of the ruling Trinamool Congress by more than 70000 votes on the Asansol Lok Sabha seat in May 2014 General Elections. He is one of the only two MPs from BJP in the state that is currently governed by Mamata Banerjee-led Trinamool Congress. Suprio is also the youngest minister in the Narendra Modi government and a new hope for BJP in West Bengal which has been ruled mostly by the Left parties since ages.
Supriyo’s inclusion in the Modi cabinet will give a boost to more representation of West Bengal at the Centre. He successful ran a massive mass-contact campaign, taking a cue from the Modi Government’s development agenda to win the Asansol seat. His victory is also being seen as the sign of BJP’s gradual emergence in West Bengal that may be a possible threat to the Left parties, Congress and the ruling TMC.
