Tura Parliamentary Constituency Election and Results Update



Tura is one of the two parliamentary constituencies of Meghalaya and is a municipality of the district of West Garo Hills. The Tura Lok Sabha Constituency (constituency number 2) consists of 505,774 number of electorates in totality, of these 254,723 are males and 251,051 are females as the Election commission of India 2009 data suggests. It is reserved for the ST category. Formed prior to the 1971 elections, Tura has 24 Vidhan Sabha segments. It is the district capital of the West Garo Hills and is also one of the largest towns in the state. It has a population of about 60,000 of which about 51% are males. The sex ratio here is 952 females per 1,000 males. The city covers a total area of about 18 sq km and stands at an average elevation of about 350 meters. It is located in a valley at the foot of the Tura Hills and is about 220 km away from Guwahati.With an average literacy rate of 86%, Tura has several schools and colleges. The official language here is English although Garo, Bengali, Hindi and Nepali are also prevalent among the locals. Most residents of Tura belong to the native Garo tribe while a minority of the population consists of Hajongs, Koches, Nepalese, Bengalis, etc. Almost 90% of the locals are Christians and the Garos sport a matrilocal and matrilineal society. Agriculture and cottage industries are the primary sources of income in this area.
