Having a population of 487,939 in 2011, Sangamner falls Ahmednagar district. The city is
located on the
banks of river Pravara. The assembly constituency of Sangamner which belongs to Shirdi
parliamentary
constituency is represented by INC (Indian National Congress) since 1990. Thorat Vijay Alias
Balasaheb
Bhausaheb won the 2009 assembly elections for the sixth consecutive time by defeating Kute
Babasaheb
Dhondiba of SHS (Shiv Sena). Bhausaheb bagged 96686 votes as against Dhondiba's 41310 votes.
The city is
called Sangam because it is the place where there is a 'sangam' (merging) of three rivers,
Pravara,
Mhalungi, and Mahanuti.
