About Shopian Assembly (Vidhan Sabha) Constituency

Shopian is a town in the district by the same name in Jammu and Kashmir. The town is also the administrative headquarters of the district. Shopian is derived from the word ' Shah-Payan' which means royal stay. The people also believe that the name is derived from the word 'Shin-Van' which means the snow forest. As of 2001 India census,it had a population of 12,396. The assembly constituency of Shopian belongs to Anantnag parliamentary constituency. Abdul Razaq Wagay of PDP won the 2008 assembly elections and is the present MLA. He defeated Mohd. Shafi of INC. Wagay bagged 8006 votes as against Shafi's 5208 votes.
