About Kathua Assembly (Vidhan Sabha) Constituency

Kathua is a city in the district by the same name of Jammu and Kashmir. The word 'Kathua' is derived from the Dogri word 'Thuan' meaning 'Scorpions'. Due to large number of Sufi shrines, the city is also referred to as 'the city of Sufis'. As of 2011 census, it had a population of 1,62,988. The assembly constituency of Kathua is a part of Udhampur parliamentary constituency. Charanjit Singh, an independent candidate won the 2008 assembly elections and is the present MLA. He defeated Som Raj of BSP. Singh received 19123 votes as against Raj's 16761 votes.
