About Hiranagar Assembly (Vidhan Sabha) Constituency

Hiranagar is a town in Kathua district of Jammu and Kashmir. The town was founded by Raja Hari Singh. As of 2001 India census, it had a population of 7879. The assembly constituency of Hiranagar belongs to Udhampur parliamentary constituency. The constituency is reserved for the Scheduled Castes. The seat has always been occupied by either BJP or INC. No other party could manage to come to power. Durga Dass of BJP won the 2008 assembly elections and is the present MLA. He defeated his nearest rival, Prem Lal, an independent candidate. Dass secured 19730 votes as against Lal's 16993 votes.
