About Jharkhand Mukti Morcha

Jharkhand Mukti Morcha, roughly translated as the Jharkhand Liberation Front, is a regional political party, as approved by the Election Commission of India. Its mass base is primarily in the state of Jharkhand, though it has an influential presence in the
neighbouring states such as West Bengal and Odisha. The party has a Centre-Right political position and operates on the political ideology of Regionalism. In other words, the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha or the JMM, demands the rights and privileges of the Jharkhandis. Its political struggles and revolutionary ideals are geared towards the development of the state of Jharkhand and the oppressed citizens of the state. Though Jharkhand is a rich source of wealth in natural resources, the people are in perpetual agony as improved techniques and facilities have not permeated the state. The JMM gears towards the questions of social and economic justice for the people of the state.

The party draws its political and social inspiration from the revolutionary ideals and ethics of 19th century tribal warrior and revolutionary, Birsa Munda, who through his constant opposition to the British rule in the country, achieved a great number of successes. The “do or die” spirit of Munda is inculcated in every member of the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha. The party’s fights towards the creation of an anti-capitalistic, anti-imperialistic political system, has earned it accolades in the state of Jharkhand and across the country.

Though in alliance with the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance for a brief span, the JMM has proved its allegiance to the United Progressive Alliance and continues to support it even to this day. The JMM has been increasingly performing better in the assembly elections. Whereas in the 2005 Jharkhand polls, the party got 17 out of the 81 assembly constituencies, coming second in the state, in the immediate next elections, the JMM witnessed a sweeping victory, thereby forming the current government in the state in coalition with the Congress.

The Leader of the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha is Shibu Soren and the current Chief Minister of the state is Hemant Soren.

Election Symbol of JMM

The Election Symbol of the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha, as approved by the Election Commission of India, is “Bow and Arrow”. This is usually drawn on a green-coloured rectangular party flag. The colour green is significant as it symbolizes the JMM’s intricate connection with the land of the state, of the natural beauty that Jharkhand inherits. Green is the colour of hope, of prosperity and of good fortune. The “Bow and Arrow” symbolism of the party is representative of the fighting spirit of the members of the Jharkhandis, in order to protect the deplorable state of the population. Pictorially, the party symbol is representative of its ideologies of regional, ethnic and linguistic exclusiveness, and its intolerance of those who are the chief enemies of the majority of the population, namely the feudal landlords, who oppress the peasants and farmers with heavy burdens of taxes. It strives to create a society of equality, fraternity, and an anti-capitalist economic and political system.
