About Sopore Assembly (Vidhan Sabha) Constituency

Sopore earlier known as Suyyapur is an apple town in the Baramulla district of Jammu and Kashmir. The town is also a trading centre. The place was founded by Utpala engineer and irrigation minister Suyya in 880 CE. As of 2001 census,the town had a population of 58,416. The assembly constituency of Sopore belongs to Baramulla Lok Sabha constituency. Mohd Ashraf Ganie of JKN won the 2008 assembly elections and is the present MLA. He defeated Abdul Rashid Dar of INC. Ganie bagged 4368 votes as against Dar's 3304 votes.
