The Valmiki Nagar Lok Sabha constituency came into existence in 2008, and is one of the 40 Lok Sabha seats which belong to the politically active state of Bihar. The Valmiki Nagar Lok Sabha Constituency (constituency number 1)consists of 1,275,653 number of electorates in totality, of these 690,155 are males and 585,498 are females as the Election commission of India 2009 data suggests.

This constituency earlier operated under the name of Bagaha Lok Sabha constituency, which was made dysfunctional after the Delimitation Commission’s Order of 2008. It lies in the West Champaran District, an administrative district located in the Tirhut Division of Bihar. With Bettiah as the administrative seat of the district, the West Champaran district is part of the Red Corridor. Owing to the fluid border this district shares with the neighbouring country of Nepal, this region is prone to high levels of corruption and crime, including illicit dealings of marijuana and weapons. This has resulted in extreme political instability. This region has a glorious history. According to mythology, the great sage Valmiki wrote the epic Ramayana in this region. In the 20th century history of anti-colonial struggle, West Champaran was a prominent region, as it was in this district that Mahatma Gandhi had begun the first traces of his famous Satyagraha Andolan.
