Google Doodle commemorates prominent American astrologer and gay rights activist Frank Kameny. Frank Kameny was personally invested in the cause of the gay rights movement because of the prejudice he faced in his life.
Growing up during the great depression in the 1930s Frank Kameny realized he wanted to become an astrologer. He graduated with both a master’s degree in 1949 and a doctorate in 1956 in astronomy. In 1957 he was hired by the United States Army Map Service as an astronomer. But when the United States government found out about his homosexuality he was ousted from his job and his security clearance. He spent the rest of his life fighting against the inhuman discrimination that gay people go through. He became one of the prominent figures of the civil rights gay movement. Federal policies changed but Kameny’s dream of being an astrologer slipped out.
Frank also challenged the American Psychiatric Association’s classification of homosexuality as a mental disorder. His undeterred determination to battle against the odds made a way for LGBTQ to freely represent themselves in society.
His view on homosexuality was that a homosexual who is willing, should the necessity arise, to stand up on his own two legs before the world, as he is, and to defend his right to live his life as he chooses. He believed that discrimination against homosexuals was as irrational as discrimination on the basis of race or religion.
Frank changed the minds of people when homosexuality was a stigma itself. It was such a taboo that the mere presence of homosexuals in federal jobs will impede the working of federal services and that is why homosexuals were dismissed from their jobs.
To honor the Stonewall riots in the pride month google doodle remembers the prominent Gay activist. The stonewall riots are a seminal moment in LGBTQ history. Kameny coined the slogan “Gay is Good” after he was inspired by Stokely Carmichael’s “Black is Beautiful.”His involvement contributed to evolving an understanding of the LGBTQ community.
In 2018 Indian Supreme Court decriminalized section 377 which criminalized homosexuality in India calling the section irrational and arbitrary. The prejudicial perceptions among people against homosexuality must change with changing times.
