Ahead of the Punjab state assembly election, Poll strategist Prashant Kishor resigned as Principal Advisor to Punjab Chief Minister (CM) Amarinder Singh on Thursday. The resignation of Kishor just before the election in the state next year suggests that he would not be involved in the Punjab state assembly election in 2022.
Kishor’s resignation is a setback to Congress leadership under Amarinder Singh in Punjab. Speculation was going around that Kishor was working with Congress at the national level for the 2024 Lok Sabha election.
Prashant Kishor in his resignation letter wrote that he was taking “a temporary break from an active role in public life.” Thus he would not be able to work as Principal Advisor to Punjab CM. He urged Amarinder Singh to kindly relieve him from the responsibility. Kishor confirmed that he will not be involved in the Punjab state assembly election in 2022. His resignation will certainly affect the fragile state of the Punjab government after increasing rivalry between Amarinder Singh and Navjot Singh Sidhu.
Amarinder Singh had announced Kishor’s appointment in the month of March as the Principal Advisor to Singh. Singh had tweeted, “Happy to share that Prashant Kishor has joined me as my principal advisor…”
According to sources, Kishor’s entire focus is on the upcoming general election in India. The victory of Mamata Banerjee in the recent West Bengal Assembly elections has significantly turned the tables. The opposition parties are joining hands to defeat BJP in the 2024 Lok Sabha election.
Prashant Kishor met with Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra last month which gave rise to speculation that Prashant will play a key role in the 2024 general election. It was much debated whether he would be an advisor or join the Indian Nation Congress.
