Indian National Congress leader Jaiveer Shergill wrote to External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar on Monday regarding the evacuation of Hindus and Sikhs as the Taliban faction is gaining control over Afghanistan. He demanded the immediate evacuation of Indians.
Jaiveer Shergill said his love for his country’s people compelled him to write to the Union Minister. He wrote that the Taliban faction is escalating in Afghanistan after the United States decided to withdraw from Afghanistan ending its 20-year-old war. Post the US withdrawal Taliban faction is fighting which will eventually turn Afghanistan into a “hub for transnational terrorism.”
Afghanistan is facing a humanitarian crisis; the violence in the nation is catastrophic. The current state will risk the lives of people; the Indian government should take measures to evacuate Indians living in Afghanistan.
According to sources, more than 600 Sikhs and around fifty Hindus are stuck in Afghanistan. He said that the Taliban is targeting these people, they are adamant to kill minorities belonging to Indian origin. In a recent incident, the Taliban had removed Nishan Sahib from a gurudwara located in Chamkani Area. Shergill wrote about various other incidents that took place in Afghanistan like the suicide attack in Jalalabad in July 2018 which killed 19 Sikhs and Hindus.
The United States has withdrawn about 95 percent of its troop from Afghanistan. The Taliban had thus started gaining control over the territory in Afghanistan. The U. S began withdrawing on May 1, 2021. The drawdown will be completed by August 31, 2021.
The Taliban’s advancing territorial gains have obviously adversely affected India. India’s investment in Afghanistan’s infrastructural developments has been a key instrument in facilitating the relationship between the two countries. Now, with Taliban taking control over Afghanistan will lead to the emergence of new challenges for India.
