The central government nominated IAS officer Anup Chandra Pandey as the New Election Commissioner. He was the former chief secretary of Uttar Pradesh.
Pandey has been appointed to the position left vacant after the former Chief Election Commissioner Sunil Arora’s retirement. The two other members of the Election Commission are Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Sushil Chandra and Election Commissioner Rajiv Kumar.
Before his retirement from the Indian civil services, Pandey served as the Chief Secretary of Uttar Pradesh (UP) before the 2019 Lok Sabha elections. Pandey was given the topmost position under UP CM Adityanath. He helped the state in the right functioning of administration in the state of Uttar Pradesh. Pandey’s predecessor Rajiv Kumar was not taken into consideration as Adityanath’s choice for the top post in the state. He also served as the Infrastructure and Industrial Development Commissioner of the state. He pursued a BTech degree in mechanical engineering followed by an MBA degree and a doctorate in ancient history.
The Kumbh Mela which was held in Prayagraj in 2019 was also organized under his supervision. Many states like Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Gujrat, Goa, Manipur, Himachal Pradesh, and Uttarakhand will have their state assembly election in 2022. Anup Chandra Pandey as an election commissioner will be responsible for the upcoming election.
