Congress President Rahul Gandhi will file his nomination papers for the Amethi Lok Sabha seat on Wednesday. He will also hold a roadshow in the constituency. UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi and Congress General Secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra are likely to accompany him.
Rahul Gandhi who has been representing in Lok Sabha since 2004 will be contesting against Union minister and Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Smriti Irani again this Lok Sabha Elections. In the 2014 general elections, Irani was defeated by Rahul Gandhi by over one lakh votes. This time, the Congress president is contesting from two Lok Sabha seats. Congress leader Nadeem Ashraf Jaisi said they will welcome their leaders in Amethi by showering flowers on them. “The party workers are excited about Rahul Gandhi’s nomination.”
Uttar Pradesh chief minister Yogi Adityanath and his cabinet colleagues will join Irani’s show of strength scheduled on Thursday. Congress leader Deepak Singh said Irani has visited Amethi 15 times since 2014 elections, spent 44 hours there and scrapped 15 schemes meant for the constituency. He tweeted in contrast, Rahul Gandhi has spent 744 hours in his constituency. “People should analyze the data independently,” he tweeted on March 26. Irani is expected to arrive in Amethi on Wednesday for the preparation of her nomination for the upcoming Lok Sabha Elections
“The then defense minister Manohar Parrikar adopted two villages in Amethi and did more for them than the local MP who failed to do justice to the villages of his own constituency. If I become an MP, I will use my MP fund for development of villages,” Irani said in a statement.
The first phase of Lok Sabha Elections 2019 are scheduled to take place tomorrow in 91 constituencies across 20 states. Amethi goes to polls in the fifth phase on May 6.
