First Woman Finance Minister of Assam
The newly sworn-in first woman first woman finance minister of Assam, Himanta Biswa Sarma assigned new portfolios to his cabinet. Ajanta Neog from the Golaghat assembly constituency bagged the role of being the first woman finance Minister of Assam. In the event of the rising cases of coronavirus, the newly formed cabinet with its management and efficiency can play a major role in combating the corona crisis.
Neog, 5 times MLA is given charge of the finance ministry in Assam, which was earlier held by Himanta Sarma during the tenure of Sarbananda Sonowal. Now, it will be crucial for the first female finance minister of the state to strengthen the declining economy in the midst of a slowdown in the entire country. With less experience in the key department like finance and the recent covid surge in Assam, the first woman FM has to put in serious efforts to fight the tough battle.
She entered the assembly in the year 2001 by defeating her rival by over 10000 votes. She had been in the last three cabinets. During her tenure as the PWD minister, Assam achieved huge success in the development of infrastructure facilities which is a prerequisite for the growth and development of a state.
The main concern of the newly formed government is to tackle the corona crisis with immediate effects. The alarming situation of Assam with a surge in the unemployment level and the government’s promise to initiate one lakh jobs by a march in the upcoming year may seem like a utopian dream.
It is noteworthy that the BJP led government in the center and the state of Assam will provide new impetus to increase cooperative federalism. The new development in the infrastructure by building Dhola Sadiya and Bogibeel bridge will boost the state’s output. The new Chief Minister and the first female finance minister will coordinate in Mobilising and allocating resources optimally and efficiently.
She is accredited to work for the interest of the indigenous people. Her win against the congress counterpart Bitupan Saikia by a margin of 9325 votes speaks volumes about her popularity and trust among the masses. The revitalization of the Orunodoi scheme will provide subsistence income support and will alleviate financial problems. Besides, due to the curfew in the state, people are expecting economic stimulus to revive the economy. Now, the decisions of the amount accruing to the economic package will surely attract deliberate scrutiny.
The expanding participation of women in politics is changing gender-specific stereotypes. Gender equality isn’t a crutch in Assam. Women’s leadership in political decision-making processes improves them.
