The JMM led coalition had maintained a lead in the vote-counting since the morning while many BJP candidates including CM Raghubar Das trailed. The coalition started celebrating by the afternoon and wishes started pouring in on twitter. The verdict of Jharkhand Assembly election 2019 was out by the evening. JMM-INC-RJD coalition scored a massive victory, whereas the BJP drowned in the anti-incumbency wave. Jharkhand’s loss is yet another addition for BJP’s losing streak. Jharkhand election results 2019 have given the coalition 47 seats whereas BJP has been reduced to just 25 seats. Here are some factors the BJP needs to contemplate upon.
National vs Local Distinction
BJP’s defeat of Jharkhand is yet another blatant proof of the ability of voters to distinguish between the national and the local interests. The party which claims an overwhelming victory in 2019 Lok Sabha elections is attributed unsuitable for the state government. The magic of Modi works only for the national interests of the country, however, voters have handed over the state government to the leaders who are more connected to the ground.
Anti- Incumbency for the Raghubar Das Government
The results have also stated that the BJP government struggled on many fronts of the tribal population of Jharkhand. The government’s proposed changes to the two tenancy acts didn’t go well with the tribal population. It was perceived to threaten their rights over the land. Also, the police crackdown on Anganwadi workers’ protests attracted the rage of voters. Raghubar Das made no significant efforts to provide jobs and level up the livelihood of the tribal population of Jharkhand. Jharkhand election 2019 was the showcase of BJP’s anti-tribal perception.
Underestimating the State Allies
BJP’s not-so resilient attitude with its state allies has again cost it one more state. The tussle with ShivSena had also landed the BJP to the ground in Maharashtra. In the Jharkhand too, BJP did not consider the AJSU’s stand for 20 seats and decided to go solo instead. It is big-time that the BJP drops its big brother claim with the state allies. The vote share was split between BJP and AJSU. On the other hand, the JMM led coalition successfully managed to paint BJP as anti-tribal in the Jharkhand election 2019. JMM made a major comeback in Jharkhand and congress has gained more strength by snatching one more state from BJP.
The opposition has understood the importance of highlighting issues such as the economy and unemployment. BJP’s rivals believe that the same strategy will work in the upcoming state elections.
