PM Modi Calls off G7 Summit 2021
Prime Minister Narendra Modi will not join the G-7 summit in the United Kingdom next month, the official of the Ministry of External Affairs announced. The G-7 summit this year is scheduled to take place in Cornwall in the United Kingdom. The Prime Minister of the UK, Boris Johnson invited Prime Minister of India, Narendra Modi to join in the summit as a special invitee from 11-13th June.  “While appreciating the invitation to the Prime Minister by UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson to attend the G7 Summit as a Special Invitee, given the prevailing COVID situation, it has been decided that the Prime Minister will not attend the G-7 Summit in person,” MEA spokesperson Arindam Bagchi said.  PM Narendra Modi canceled the G-7 visit due to the sudden surge in Covid 19 cases in India. G-7 meet is the second in-person meet that Modi has declined. He earlier called off his visit to Porto in Portugal to attend India-European Union (EU) leaders meeting. It was later held virtually on 8 May.  The G-7 comprises the United Kingdom (UK), Japan, France, Germany, Italy, Canada, and the United States. Earlier Russia was excluded from the G-7 after it invaded Crimea.  Apart from India, Australia and South Korea are also invited to participate in the proceedings of the summit as “guest countries”. The objective of the summit is to unite leading democracies to help the world build back better from coronavirus and create a greener, more prosperous future.  India was also invited to the 2020 summit hosted by the USA which could not take place due to the Corona pandemic. Previously India has attended the summit meetings five times between 2005-2009. This year India is facing the vicious second wave of the corona crisis, daily surge in cases, and the Scarcity of the health infrastructure has shaken the nation to the core. With the lurking crisis in our domestic environment, Prime Minister Modi decided to call off the plan to visit the United Kingdom for the summit.   Due to rising cases of Covid-19 Boris Johnson had called off his visit to India last month. Earlier this month the External Affairs Minister, S Jaishankar traveled to London to attend the G-7 foreign minister’s meeting. However, he could not attend the meeting in person because some members of his delegation tested Covid positive. He isolated himself and attended the meeting in a virtual format.  India will play a major key role internationally. This year India will host the BRICS (Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa) and will host the G-20 summit in 2023.
