Delhi High Court dismissed the Central Vista Project plea to stop the construction. Multiple PIL (Public Interest Litigation) notices were raised and banners were seen placed on the development site demanding to stop the project. However, the Delhi HC has decided to proceed with the construction and has even filed a fine of 1 Lakh on the petitioners.
The court has said, “The construction of Central Vista needs to be completed before November. All the Covid-19 protocols are being followed at the construction site and the workers are adhering to the rules and regulations. Hence, there is no reason to stop this project”. PM Modi and officials have also claimed that Covid-19 behavior is being followed at the site and workers are taking care of sanitization, wearing masks, thermal screenings are being conducted at every point, and there is also an isolation center for the workers to rest.
The Central Vista Project has been sanctioned a budget of Rs. 20,000 crores. Out of which, approximately 971 crores will be spent on constructing the new Parliament building and the remaining to be used for the minister’s residences.
A joint petition was filed by Anaya Malhotra and Sohail Hashmi against the construction of the Central Vista project. They said, “It is non-essential and can surely be put on hold amid the pandemic”.
The construction tender of the Central Vista project has been assigned to Shapoorji Pallonji and Company Pvt Ltd. The company claims that good care is being taken of the workers and we’re concerned about their well-being and safety.
