The Chief Minister of Assam, Himanta Biswa Sarma advised the immigrant Muslims to control the population and follow effective family planning norms. The CM made this significant remark at a press conference in Guwahati while addressing a few questions on land encroachment.
The CM said, “If the population in the state keeps growing in the same manner, then one day even the Kamakhaya temple land will encroach, and even my house will be ”. The Kamakhya temple is a famous pilgrim center in Guwahati which the CM used as a reference.
There is about 31% of the Immigrant Muslim population in Assam. Himanta Biswa said, “Population explosion is a crucial concern, as it gives rise to other issues like poverty and encroachment. So if we can control the population, we can fight against several social issues at once”. Hence, Biswa appealed to the immigrant Muslim community to adopt decent family planning norms.
The AIUDF General Secretary and an MLA from the Mancachar constituency, Mr. Animul Islam said, “The CM’s statement is politically motivated and targets a specific community”.
Earlier, several BJP leaders also made a few remarks on the population explosion while targeting immigrant Muslims. A BJP MLA in Rajasthan once Tweeted, “Muslims are giving birth to 12-13 children with an aim to outnumber Hindus by the year 2030”. A BJP MP also posted a controversial Tweet that said, “The cases of rape and murder are on the rise in the country because of the growing Muslim population.
The CM of Assam is concerned about the rising immigrant Muslim population in the state. He said, “We have already enacted a population policy in the last assembly session. But we particularly want to work with the minority Muslim community to reduce the population burden.”
