Guwahati: Assam Congress MLA Rupjyoti Kurmi attacked during gunfire at Assam, near Jorhat district. Intense gunfire shots whiz past the MLA along with three security officers. The shots allegedly came from the Nagaland side of the state border. The visuals of the incident have also been recorded, where the MLA and the officers were seen running in the jungle after the bullets attack.
A senior police officer who reported the incident said, “Congress MLA Rupjyoti Kurmi accompanied by three security officers headed towards Dessoi valley reserve forest to check encroachment. As soon as they heard the gunshots being fired from the other side, they started running and managed to escape the area”.
The Chief Minister of Assam, Himanta Biswa Sharma also expressed his concern on this incident. The CM has handed over the case to officer GP Singh to conduct further investigation. He has also requested GP Singh pay a visit to the crime scene and thoroughly monitor the surrounding areas.
As per Rupjyoti Kurmi’s statement, “After getting reports on encroachment, I proceeded towards the Dessoi valley reserve forest area along with 3 personal security chiefs. We suddenly started hearing gunshots from the Nagaland side of the state border. Some people open fire at us, although we were lucky enough to escape the area”. She further added, “I have also raised my concern at the Assam State Assembly but the government officials are not talking to Nagaland counterpart regarding the issue of encroachment”.
Jorhat Police Officer, Ankur Jain in the light of this matter said “Gunshots were heard a few days ago as well where the incident took place. The shots were fired from the disputed land. After the inquiry, we came to know that some villagers who are residing on the other side of the border fired the shorts after they panicked”.
