On 11 July, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath released the state’s Population Policy 2021-2030 celebrating world population day.
Yogi Adityanath giving his opinion on the increasing population said, “Increasing population can be a hurdle in way of development.” He added that in the state’s Population Policy 2021-2030 every community has been taken care of.
This development comes ahead of the state assembly election in Uttar Pradesh. The ‘population issue’ is a key issue. Rising population is a concern, and thus population control is the need of the hour. The state government wants to bring down the birth rate to 2.1 by 2026.
The draft of the population bill proposes to restrict people with more than two children from contesting local bodies polls, it will also debar such people from applying for government jobs or receiving any kind of subsidy. Such government employees will be debarred from getting a promotion.
UP CM Adityanath said that the population policy is concerned with population stabilization and paving a path for happiness and prosperity to every citizen at his doorstep.
The bill Incentivices government employees who adopt the two-child norm policy to get two additional increments during the entire service, maternity or as the case may be, paternity leave of 12 months, with full salary and allowances and a 3% increase in the employer’s contribution fund under the National Pension Scheme.
The state’s population policy got criticism from the opposition parties. Congress said that it is a mere ‘political’ move and Samajwadi Party (SP) called it, ‘murder of democracy.
SP MP Shafiqur Rahman Barq questioned the draft policy, asking from where India will get manpower in case of a war.
Population control is necessary overpopulation will create a massive water shortage as well as arable land, and add more to the pollution crisis.
During the 1970s, Congress made efforts to control the population. The effort however faced coercion. Union Minister Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi praised the state’s efforts of spreading awareness on population control.
