Twitter has restored the blue tick of verification of M Venkaiah Naidu’s account today. Mr. Venkaiah Naidu is the vice president of India and a member of the Rajya Sabha. Twitter briefly removed the “Verification badge”, the blue tick icon from his personal handle. The tech giant restored the blue tick within a few hours, as many objections were raised by the Vice President’s office.
The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MEIT) issued a legal notice to Twitter for removing the blue tick of verification without sending any prior information. Sources said, “Twitter is merely testing the patience of Indians” while raising objections against this matter. A massive social media outrage was fired when Twitter removed the blue tick off Naidu’s personal account.
The Ministry questioned Twitter and asked, “Vice President is a constitution post. Would the same had been done with American leader’s social media accounts?”.
Twitter said “The blue tick of verification was removed from M Venkaiah Naidu’s account due to “Inactivity”. The personal handle of Naidu has been inactive since July 2020 due to which the verified badge was removed from his profile”.
The last Tweet posted from Naidu’s account was on July 23, 2020. As per Twitter’s policies, the blue tick sign of verification is removed when the account is inactive for more than 6 months. The account holder needs to ensure to log in at least once in 6 months. Twitter said, “One may also lose the blue tick if you change your account handle/name”.
Well, a similar instance has happened earlier as well when the blue tick verification was removed from many RSS leader’s Twitter accounts.
The ongoing tussle between Indian and social media giants regarding imposing the new IT rules has been fueled after this incidence. The Ministry of Electronics and IT has warned Twitter to comply with the new social media guidelines and stick to the “law of the land”.
