Fugitive diamantaire, Mehul Choksi captured by the authorities of Dominica. His dramatic escape was aborted by the local police authorities while he was trying to flee away to Cuba in a boat. Mehul Choksi is detained in Dominica for “Illegal entry”. The High Court of Justice Commonwealth in Dominica has put a stay order on his repatriation from Dominica.
Choksi was missing from his home since the 23rd of May. A missing person’s report was filed by a close family member at the Antigua Johnson’s Point Police Station. As informed by the police, “Choksi was last seen on 23rd of May, around 5:15 PM. He left his house in a motor vehicle and since then none of the acquaintances know about his whereabouts”.
Residing in Antigua and Barbuda, Mehul Choksi is a former Indian Businessman indulged in various criminal conspiracies. He is wanted by the Indian Judicial Authorities for criminal breach of trust, illegal activities, cheating, and dishonesty including delivery of property, corruption, and other alleged charges. Mehul Choksi is one of India’s most wanted for his involvement in the Punjab National Bank scam worth Rs. 14,000 crores.
Nirav Modi, Mr. Mehul’s nephew also left India after the PNB loan fraud was surfaced in January 2018. As informed by the sources, he took citizenship in Antigua two months prior to the scam was revealed by the authorities.
Dominica is a tiny mountainous island located in the Caribbean. Sources said, “Mehul Choksi was caught by the local police authorities of Dominica and was immediately captured in custody while he was trying to flee away to Cuba”.
The Prime Minister of Antigua and Barbuda said “We had no knowledge till date that Mehul Choksi has fled from the country”. He further added, “Two cases are already running against Mr. Mehul Choksi in the Antigua Court, for extradition and revocation of citizenship”. In his defense, Mehul Choski also appointed a renowned lawyer from the United Kingdom in order to show his presence and willingness to participate in the cases.
CBI and the Enforcement Directorate are in touch with the Dominica authorities. CBI sources mention “Mehul Choksi’s attempt to fleeing will make the cases stronger. We are positive about the fact the Mr. Mehul will soon be in India”.
