Ghaziabad Police sent a notice to Twitter’s former grievance officer in India Dharmendra Chatur in connection with the viral video of a man assaulted on June 5. Earlier the Uttar Pradesh police had sent several notices to Twitter India chief Manish Maheshwari.
Uttar Pradesh police have registered a case against Twitter India, journalists, and six individuals. Police claimed that the video hails false propaganda of communal hatred, which is injurious to our society. The hate crime seen in the unverified video doesn’t relate to any communal hatred, they have evidence to show that the victim and the accused in the assault had known each other. The accused had a personal grudge against the 72-year-old Abdul Samad.
Under section 41A of the Criminal Procedure Code (CrPc), the notice has been sent to the former grievance officer of the Microblogging site. Several political party members are also named in the FIR like Salman Nizami Shama Mohamed, and Maskoor Usmani.
“They have been directed to record their statements at the police station within seven days, failing which action can be initiated against them,”SHO of Loni police station said.
Twitter appointed Dharmendra Chatur as the grievance officer of Twitter India. The new IT intermediary guidelines called for a grievance officer to address the grievances of the people and the government of India. But, within a month, Chatur resigned from his post. UP police issued notice to Chatur even though he has resigned, the police stated that when the video of the incident went viral on Twitter, Chatur was the grievance officer,
UP police issued notice to Twitter India MD on June 17 under sec 166 of the Criminal Procedure Code. After that, he was again issued a notice on June 21 under section 41 A. The Karnataka High Court however restrained the UP police from taking intimidating action against Manish Maheshwari.
The Ghaziabad police filed charges against Samajwadi Party functionary Ummed Phelwan Idris for invoking the stringent National Security Act (NSA) for spreading communal twist to the assault case. A charge sheet against 11 accused has been filed by the UP Police.
