Doctors association in India said to observe June 1, 2021 as ‘Black Day’. The tiff over Baba Ramdev’s critical remark on medical practitioners in the country was exaggerated. Harsh Vardhan, Union Health Minister publicly criticized Ramdev’s remarks.

The Federation of Resident Doctors’ Association (FORDA) has asked to observe today as ‘Black Day’ to object to Ramdev’s comment. Baba Ramdev targeting medical treatment said, “a stupid and failed science”.He even claimed that the number of deaths due to coronavirus has implied that allopathy is not hundred percent effective.

The stir is caused by a viral video in which Baba Ramdev passes baseless comments over the usage of allopathic medicines. He dared to question the efficacy of vaccines and claimed that many doctors died even after taking both doses of vaccines.

In these critical times, when the nation is showing its respect to the doctors and nurses majorly the medical association Baba Ramdev’s remarks sparks a sense of confusion and conflict in the minds of ordinary citizens.

The doctor’s association demanded an ‘open public apology’ from Baba Ramdev. The Federation of Resident Doctors’ Association said that no action has been taken yet against Ramdev’s objectionable remarks. FORDA said that if an apology is not issued by the yoga guru, the association will file a complaint against him under the Epidemic Diseases Act, 1897.

Various doctor’s associations like the Doctors Association Jammu (DAJ), the India Medical Association (IMA) expressed their discontent with Ramdev’s comments.

Dr. Arun Gadre, founding member of the Alliance of Doctors for Ethical Healthcare said that evidence-based medicine is the need of the hour.

The second wave of the pandemic nearly collapsed the nation. The irresponsible management increased the number of cases. The spread of fake news on social media and other platforms made citizens reluctant to vaccinate themselves. Many rural areas even avoided giving samples to the medical workers which further Worsened the condition. The reluctant behavior of people has an origin in the guise of misinformation that spreads quickly.

Ramdev’s comments fuelled the vaccine hesitancy among citizens. The Indian government should not show its sympathy towards ‘irrational’ remarks. Government should actively support Science and its rationality over baseless remarks.
