Community Party of India (Marxist) leader Dr. V Sivadasan and three others took oath as members of the council of States in the presence of Vice President Venkaiah Naidu. 

4 Rajya Sabha members who took oath on Tuesday are Swapan Dasgupta, senior advocate Mahesh Jethmalani, journalist John Brittas and CPI (M) leader V Sivadasan. 

Both Brittas and Sivadasan have been elected to the Rajya Sabha for the first term. Among the nominated members, Dasgupta has been returned to Rajya Sabha, Shri Mahesh Jethmalani on the other hand has been nominated to the Rajya Sabha for the first time. Senior journalist John Brittas has worked as media advisor to Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan. He and CPI (M) leader V. Sivadasan is elected from Kerala. 

Swapan Dasgupta from West Bengal said that he will use his term to call attention to the issues of West Bengal and will show commitment towards the educational system in the country.

Rajya Sabha Chairman M Venkaiah Naidu requested Members of Parliament (MPs) to educate and influence people to vaccinate themselves against Covid-19. He said that the members of the council of states should educate and motivate people in their constituencies to take the vaccine at the earliest.
