KARNATAKA BY-ELECTIONS RESULTS SUMMARY

Karnataka By-Polls Results: BJP:12, INC:2, JD(S):0, INDEPENDENT:1

With BJP en-route a mammoth victory in the Karntaka bypolls, chief minister B.S. Yediyurappa is set to retain his office. The by-elections happened on 5th of December on a total of 15 seats to decide the fate of the ruling BJP government and also of the rebel MLAs who wanted re-elections after they resigned from the Congress-JD(S) alliance in July which eventually led to the downfall of the coalition government led by H.D. Kumaraswamy. The BJP had 104 MLAs and the support of one independent candidate while the Congress and JD(S) have 80 and 37 seats respectively. Post the break-up of the MLAs, BJP won support of an independent candidate an increased their ally to 105 while the Congress and JD(S) were down to 66 and 34 respectively.

The counting of votes began at 8 am today and this looks like a good day for the BJP as the results have come completely favouring the four months-old BJP government. The BJP only needed 7 seats to retain power in Karnataka. But the people of Karnataka have given them absolute majority as they are leading on 12 out of the 15 seats. The Congress has lost 9 seats and is down to 2 seats while the JD(S) has scored a duck losing 3 seats. One independent candidate backed by the JD(S) has managed to defeat a BJP candidate.

BJP has conquered the Vijayanagara, Chikkaballapura, Yellapura, Krishnaraja Puram, Ranebennur, Hirenkerur, Gokak, Kangwad, Athani, Krishnarajapet, Mahalakshmi Layout and Yeshwantpur constituencies while the Congress has managed to hold Shivaji Nagar and Hunsur seats. The Hosakote constituency has been bagged by an independent candidate, Sharat Kumar K who defeated the BJP candidate, N Nagaraju by a huge margin.

CM B.S. Yediyurappa thanked the people of Karnataka for a good verdict and quoted “Now, without any problem we can give a pro-people and a stable government.” Prime Minister Narendra Modi also congratulated the Karnataka government and said that the mandate in Karnataka was stolen through back door by Congress and people have now taught the party a lesson. “Some people said BJP has limited influence in south; people of Karnataka defeated and punished them in a democratic way during bypolls. Congress and its allies subverted mandate in Karnataka, stabbed it in the back” quoted PM Modi while addressing a rally in Jharkhand.
